It is quite rare to find one of the earlier 20hp models in Drophead Coupe form so this is something of a rarity. It is a 1924 Rolls-Royce 20hp Drophead Coupe which was originally bodied as a Panel Brougham by Brewster in the USA, as was typical with cars in period it was rebodied in the thirties with the more fashionable Drophead COupe body it now carries. It is a smaller version of the famous Phantom body of the same vintage. Our car has spent most of its lfe in the USA but is UK Registered and ready for its next owner. It has been comprehensively restored in recent years with a full photographic record to show the work.

Intended to broaden the marque's reach beyond the fabulously rich to the merely very wealthy, the Rolls-Royce 20HP was introduced in 1922. A more radical design than its illustrious 40/50HP Silver Ghost sibling, the newcomer was based around a 10ft 9in wheelbase ladder-frame chassis equipped with all-round semi-elliptic leaf-sprung suspension, rear-wheel brakes and fully-floating 'Hotchkiss Drive' back axle. The first Rolls-Royce engine to feature overhead valvegear, its 3127cc straight-six was designed to run at anywhere between 150rpm and 3,500rpm. Notably quiet, it was mounted in unit with the clutch and three-speed manual gearbox. Though, the provision of a centre ball change gearlever was deemed excessively modern and American by some! Priced at £1,100 in bare chassis guise, the 20HP was not only less expensive than the Silver Ghost but also lighter and more responsive to drive too.

Interior:
Our car has been completely retrimmed in recent years so there is nothing to address at all. The seats are very comfortable and the
carpet is all good. All the dials and instruments seem to work as they should.

Exterior:
The car is finished in Cream over Blue and the quality of the paintwork is extremely good, it was a very professional job. The wire wheels are good and the soft top is also nearly new. All in all, a very nice, although not pebble beach, restoration. The panel gpas on the body are not perfect and the bonnet is not a perfect fit for the top of the radiator, typical for a later rebody.

Mechanical:
our car is extremely good mechanically, it starts and drives very well. The engine pulls strongly and the gearbox changes smoothly. There are no undue knocks or rattles from the suspension. The car has been in storage for a while so we would recommend a thorough service before regular use to blow out the cobwebs.

Summary:
This is a very pretty Rolls-Royce Drophead Coupe form the twenties, it has been well restored and is in excellent condition with a long MOT. There is a photographic history of the restoration and a large history file. It is nigh impossible to find Dropheads in this price range which is normally the home of limousines etc! I think you will fall in love with this car when you see it in the flesh and it represents great value in todays market.
