Here we have a fantastic example of the CL 600 in Brilliant Silver Metallic. The CL is definitively the flagship of the Mercedes-Benz car range. It has the ability to eat up the autobahn on a cross continent tour or worry super cars on a track, all whilst keeping its occupants cool and comfortable in its luxurious air conditioned cabin. The perfect all rounder.
A new model designation first introduced for 1992, the CL-Class was a family of luxurious high-performance four-seater coupés based on the S-Class saloon platform but 8" shorter in the wheelbase. After some seven years in production, the conservatively styled 1st Generation Type C140 was replaced in 1999 by the much more modern looking C215, as seen here.
Two basic engines were available: a 5.0-litre 302bhp V8 and 5.8-litre 362bhp V12, while tuned AMG variants provided even more power. Equipped with very latest in automotive technology, the CL family boasted fully active suspension and Bi-Xenon HID headlights as well as the usual ABS, climate control, CD stereo, navigation system, heated front seats, electric sunroof, all-leather interior, etc. Five- and seven-speed automatic transmissions were available (there was no manual option). Another interesting feature was 'Active Cylinder Control' (fitted to the V12 cars from 2000-2002) which cut cylinders during gentle driving in the interests of better fuel economy. This allowed the CL600 to achieve better fuel economy than the V8 CL500. Not bad for a car with a 5.8-litre V12 that developed 367bhp and 391lb ft of torque, yielding a 0-60 mph time of 5.9 sec.
As with its predecessors, the W215 model coupé is based on the underpinnings of the S-Class limousine, and in a quest to give the two-door greater standing, Mercedes used it to premiere various technological innovations. It was the first Mercedes to feature Active Body Control (ABC), a system that used four hydraulic suspension struts to keep the car level through corners.
Although the S-Class' wheelbase was shortened by eight inches and the ABC worked highly effectively, the CL's natural role is as a grand tourer. With more rear seat space than many executive saloons, a huge boot and a cosseting driving environment, the CL is one of the most soothing cars you could hope to take on a long trip. It's remarkably adept on tighter roads, too. Turn into a corner and there's no body roll, so you're aware of all four tyres working evenly. It's an unusual sensation that takes some getting used to – unlike the turbine-smooth V12, which is wonderful from the word go.
Our car has the 5.8-litre V12-engined and has covered circa 91,000 miles since delivery. It benefits from new ignition coil packs, new tyres, and a new stainless steel exhaust, all of which were fitted in 2012. Some service history is available along with lots of past MOTs, and the car also comes with MoT to November 2018. The options list truly is all encompassing, the car is loaded with, proximity-controlled cruise control, Garage door opener, automatic headlights, optional wood trim, refrigerator in the boot, voice control and antenna for car phone, Multi contour deluxe font seats with ventilation and heating, electric roller blind for the rear window, anti theft/break in warning system, Bi-xenon headlights, AMG 19” alloy wheels, AMG styling package, CD changer, TV tuner, Heated screen wash and Keyless go.
All in all this CL 600 offers the best coupe motoring in the world, it was sold last year for £13,000 from Carlians making our car is truly a fantastic deal. I do not think you can get as much luxury, speed and comfort for so little from any other car. Please hurry as this appreciating modern classic will not be around for long at this price.
